On Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at noon, a warm, dazzling spring day, we sat in the back dining room at the Arts & Letters Café (ALC), having the last lunch on the last day of a very special place. We sat in the midst of beautiful paintings, classical music, and the delight of a great restaurant. There could not be a better way to say good-bye to Frank and Tricia Goss’s ALC than to sit with friends and watch Frank preside over the last service.

From the back room you can watch all the action. The bankers, builders, bozos, and billionaires sharing the experience. This fine ballet of servers and chefs, busing and seating, eating and ordering, hustling, advising, cajoling, pampering, and paying. From the back room you can sip your wine, savor your soup, and appreciate what it takes to create and operate a place like the ALC.

I have never seen another place like it: the gardens, the art, the books, the shows, events, poetry, concerts, opera , wine, food, and conversation. No place else, never will be another ALC.

Thank you, Frank and Tricia.
