The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition sponsored Illuminando la Noche in Goleta and Carpinteria, and along State and Milpas streets, and mounted front and rear LED lights on 700 bicycles.

As daylight savings comes to an end, the Santa Barbara Bike Coalition (SBBIKE) hosts Light Up the Night, or Iluminando la Noche, its annual weeklong bike light distribution event to ensure no community member bikes after dark without a light. The event, the fifth of its kind, is especially important for people who rely on their bikes year-round to get to school, work, and to run errands, SBBIKE said in a prepared statement.

Starting at 5 p.m. every evening from Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, SBBIKE volunteers will give a total of 1,000 free bike lights to low-income cyclists at a different location in the South Coast. Bilingual volunteers will be at Milpas and Yanonali Streets on Monday pending rain, Linden Street and Carpinteria Avenue on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m., the Goleta Valley Community Center on Wednesday, 628 W. Micheltorena Street on Thursday, and again at Milpas and Yanonali Streets on Friday night. While handing out bike lights, volunteers will also give residents quick tips for safer cycling and tell them about Bici Centro, the Bike Coalition’s DIY bicycle repair shop at 434 Olive Street.

Light Up the Night is sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara, Measure A Partner Jurisdictions, and SBBIKE, specifically volunteers of its Spanish Language Outreach Committee. It’s hosted by the Goleta Valley Community Center, Carpinteria Family School, Allen Construction, and the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics.
