Carbajal, Fareed Voice Conflicting Gun Control Views

In the wake of the Orlando shooting, the two remaining candidates in the 24th congressional race expressed conflicting viewpoints on gun control measures proposed in the Senate this week. Democrat and county supervisor Salud Carbajal — who secured 62,033 votes in last week’s election — said he is in favor of prohibiting anyone on the terrorism watch list from buying firearms. “If you are too dangerous to fly on an airplane, then you are too dangerous to buy a gun,” he said in an email. “It’s common sense that could save countless lives…The time to act is now. We must not wait.”

Republican Justin Fareed — who finished second with 40,161 votes — said in a statement while he “wholeheartedly supports measures to keep firearms out of the hands of terrorists,” he contended “it’s widely known that the terrorist watch list is a flawed system that has misidentified innocent Americans in the past and badly needs to be updated to address today’s threats.” He added, “It is necessary that Congress and our next president work to address the root of the issue, which is ISIS.”

As of Tuesday night tallies, Republican Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian had 35,691 votes. Democrat Helene Schneider, the mayor of the City of Santa Barbara, came in third with 28,193 votes. Democrat Bill Ostrander secured 11,105 votes, sneaking past Republican Matt Kokkonen, who got 10,825.
