CordeValle and the U.S. Women’s Open
Golf Championship Set in Santa Cruz Mountains
Monday, June 27, 2016
It is not often that we get a major golf championship in California. Just a few hours north on the 101, Rosewood CordeValle will be hosting the U.S. Women’s Open July 4-10. This very elegant resort property might be the most underrated golf resort on the West Coast. Attending the Women’s Open would set the stage for your own visit to CordeValle after the excitement settles down.
CordeValle is set in the Santa Cruz Mountains just west of San Martin and about 30 minutes southwest of San Jose. The resort’s bungalows and suites are perched high on a hill overlooking the entire golf course, each with a patio ideal for relaxing and taking in the views. The rooms are very spacious, and the large patios even more so. All sorts of wildlife are also in view, especially deer. Warm days give way to cool nights here in this peaceful canyon. This setting must be enjoyed with a fine glass of wine.
The accommodations are all first class with everything you would expect from a five-star property. Rooms are appointed with goose-down comforters, flat-screen TVs, original artwork, and fireplaces. The bathrooms feature a separate shower and whirlpool tub overlooking the golf course and valley. Guests can choose from bungalows, villa suites, and fairway homes depending upon the size of their party.
The Main Clubhouse is where you check in at Rosewood CordeValle, and it is also home to the hotel’s signature restaurant, Il Vigneto. This venue features contemporary California cuisine with a Southwestern inspiration and Italian influences. The restaurant overlooks the finishing holes on the golf course with indoor and outdoor dining available. My seared Alaskan salmon was expertly prepared as was the avocado papaya salad for a starter. All food items are locally sourced when possible or procured from organic farmers. It shows in the taste.
The One-Iron Grille was our choice for a late breakfast the next morning and a great way to get ready for golf. This setting is very popular with the golf members at CordeValle, and the food was also very good. When visiting CordeValle I would also highly recommend at least one meal from room service to take full advantage of the great patios each room enjoys.
The CordeValle Golf Course is equal in stature to the hotel itself, which is no small task. This is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece that winds its way through 260 acres with barrancas and lakes to hold your attention. It is tough but fair, which is a Trent Jones Jr. trademark. Other than the hotel and winery there are no structures in sight here, just raw nature.
CordeValle Golf Club features very fast greens, immaculate conditions, and exciting closing holes. Who can forget Rocco Meditate holing his approach shot for an eagle on 17 years ago to win the PGA Tour event held here? The 18th hole can be a tricky finish as the tee shot crosses the barranca on this dogleg left par four. The 9th hole is also a risk reward par five guarded by a huge lake and in view from the clubhouse and restaurants.
The Main Clubhouse is also home to a state-of-the-art fitness room, and there is a large pool area nearby. They also have a golf library in case the mood strikes you. For complete details visit RosewoodHotels.com.
The U.S. Women’s Open
CordeValle will host the U.S. Women’s Open, which is by far the most important championship in women’s golf, from July 4-10. If you attend on Thursday or Friday that week, you will have the best viewing experience with less crowds and a good look at your favorite players. Canadian youngster Brooke Henderson and New Zealander Lydia Ko look to be the favorites. I would bet on Ko here as the course should not play too long in July and does reward accurate iron play which is her strength. Go to 2016USWomensOpen.com to purchase tickets.
Whether for the U.S. Open or just a golf trip of your own, I highly recommend visiting this California treasure. Rosewood CordeValle could also be a great pick for a family or corporate retreat.
