UCSB No. 24 in the World

Global Ranking Based on Academic Research Recognizes UCs

In a crowded field of 1,000 contenders, UCSB came up 24th in U.S. News & World Reports 2017 listing of the best universities in the world. In conjunction with Clarivate Analytics, the survey compared academic research at the institutions, and how often the schools’ publications were in the 10 percent most cited and also the top 1 percent of citations — or subsequent papers that referenced the previous research. Global and regional reputation were part of the evaluation, as were research productivity, conferences, and collaboration across 22 subjects ranging from the physical sciences to social sciences and fine arts.

The survey spanned 65 countries, with Oxford and Cambridge at No. 6 and 7, respectively. In California, the UCs did well, with Berkeley coming in at No. 4, UCLA No. 10, UC San Diego No. 15, and UC San Francisco No. 16. U.S. News ranked Harvard University No. 1, followed by MIT and Stanford. The first non-English-speaking university in the list is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, at No. 35.
