Why do we continue to accept the use of incredibly loud and often very scary explosions that are heard for miles when there is another option?! I’m talking about “Quiet Fireworks” that are not uncommon in Europe.

Think beyond the “patriotic” symbolism of fireworks with loud explosions. Consider how many people and animals are negatively affected by these deafening sounds.

  1. War veterans. PTSD.

  2. Elderly people. Often asleep earlier. Some suffer from dementia, confusion, and other health conditions that reaction to fireworks can severely affect.

  3. Pets. We all know how painful these explosions are on pets, which have a heightened sense of hearing. Even deaf dogs can feel the vibration of the explosions and are terrified, I know because I have one. Animal shelters are swamped with scared and lost pets the day after fireworks are set off. Many never return home.

  4. Young children. They don’t understand what these loud noises are. They also are usually asleep when fireworks go off, not for long though. Babies and fireworks don’t mix!

I personally believe we should strive to be a more humane society that is not so self-absorbed with expensive and short “celebrations” at the expense of these vulnerable parts of our community.

I would welcome a ban of any and all fireworks, but I know I am in the minority. For now, lets at least consider “Quiet Fireworks.” Then everyone can enjoy the show.
