The City of Goleta is searching for a design for a new, expanded train depot just south of the existing Amtrak platform. Located at the old Direct Relief warehouse on South La Patera Lane, the new station will be 8,000 square feet and include a depot building to hold waiting rooms, a café, a community meeting room, and shower and restroom facilities — a vast improvement over the current platform which has no amenities. Additionally, the station will accommodate bus and carpool arrivals with parking, bike lanes, and sidewalks.
The current platform serves about 61,000 riders a year, many taking advantage of the morning commuter train that started up in April 2018. According to city spokesperson Valerie Cantella, rail use is expected to increase by 5 percent per year with the new depot in place. The project will cost an estimated $19 million, Cantella said, including construction and land acquisition. The City of Goleta received a grant of $13 million from the Transit & Intercity Rail Capital Program last May to held fund the project.
