Doing the Half-Century Stomp
FAIRGROUND PROFUNDITY: Late Sunday night on the Monterey Jazz Festival’s arena stage, the “colossus Sonny Rollins” (as emcee Mort Sahl introduced him) was wrapping up another robust performance, the sort he has long supplied here, starting with the inaugural event in 1958. He marveled: “Fifty years! Here’s to the next fifty years! I’ll be here.” At the end of a good Rollins set, anything seems possible. Read story.
2007 Fall Arts Preview - Jazz
This fall’s jazz fare includes some authentic legends, including a long-awaited return by guitarist John McLaughlin, and more expected return visits from keyboardist Herbie Hancock and vocalist Dianne Reeves, both in the upper echelon of their respective disciplines. McLaughlin’s upcoming Lobero show represents a healthy pattern of jazz greats who stop in Santa Barbara on their way to or from the legendary Monterey Jazz Festival. But the biggest newcomer on the fall schedule is the first annual Solvang Jazz Festival, a brand new event started by Crusaders’ drummer Stix Hooper. For two days, Solvang will be host to a few concerts and a great idea in terms of jazz culture in the area. Read story.
Jazz Great Brubeck Returns to Lobero
Take Dave
At a cool 87 years old, Dave Brubeck endures and his musical passion continues to inspire. Having recently released an intimate new CD, Indian Summer, he returns to the Lobero on Monday, August 27, at 8 p.m. Brubeck’s remarkably cohesive new album contains both classic standards as well as elegant new material, all done as solo piano work. Boldly, Brubeck recorded most of the material in one take, yet the music nevertheless achieves a beautiful timelessness, even as it evokes decades of images and memories. Read story.
Saxophone Virtuoso Ernie Watts Comes to SOhO
Sparks Will Fly
The rapturous response for Charlie Haden’s Quartet West at the Lobero Theatre last November was in no small part due to the playing of saxophonist Ernie Watts. Since joining the Quartet West when it formed in 1987, Watts has made it clear that he belongs in the elite category of major jazz saxophonists alongside big names like Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins. He carves up the changes and rides the rhythm section with the best of them, bringing a soulful, bluesy tinge to the full range of post-bop, post-Coltrane sax techniques. Read story.
