Santa Barbara’s Artamo Press has published its second poetry series of three volumes and launched the series at a reading June 17 at the Karpeles Manuscript Library: Libido Dreams by Glenna Luschei, Adventures of the Minor Poet by David Starkey, and The Doves Flew High by David Krieger. The Varied Art of Haiku

Hankering to commit a poem or two? These days, haiku practice is where involvement with poetry writing often starts. The form looks so appealingly simple: Three lines consisting of five syllables, seven syllables, and five syllables again, and that’s it. But for accomplished haiku (the plural’s the same as the singular), there’s more to consider. Read story.

Sights and Sounds from the First Half of Poetry Month

March 31, Contemporary Arts Forum: David Starkey recognizes that many in the audience have been to recent readings, and so reads “from the B-side” of his book. Starkey admits, “I think my best poems are edgy and a little distasteful, and I don’t want to come across like that as a person you know.” Though Cecilia Woloch fusses about her reading glasses and asks us if we know where the Carpathians are, her poems are downright sexy. From a villanelle: “His eyes are Hindu blue and when he smiles / I taste the way he’d kiss me, hot and mild.” Read story.
