Edith Simon Umansky, 85, passed away on July 1st , 2009, at home, in Fort Lee, New Jersey, with her daughters by her side.

Mom loved Santa Barbara, and spent the winters here for twelve years in the home of her daughter, Deborah, and grandchildren, Josh and Hillary. “Nana” helped in their school (she was a retired teacher and school librarian), attended all performances and games, fund raised, cheered, consoled, advised, and sewed. She was the team “Nana”.

She also made her own life in Santa Barbara, learning pottery and jewelry making, doing choral singing, taking classes in Yiddish, attending the Schmooze Room, the Brandeis Book Club and Irish Music Jams. She made friends wherever she went.

In her life on the East Coast, she was Nana to three grandchildren, delivered Kosher Meals on Wheels, attended opera, ballet, theater, and book club with friends, hosted family gatherings and welcomed many of her California grandkids friends into her home.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 47 years, Harlan, and her sister, Rose. She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Ron), Deborah (Bob), and Diane (Mick), grandchildren Lisa, Joshua, Hillary, Kyle, Jesse, Seth and three great-grandchildren. Our family would like to especially thank Iza for her devoted care and companionship during the last year and a half of Mom’s life.

In our Mother’s memory, donations can be made to The Jewish Federation of Santa Barbara, the Isla Vista Minyan or any school library.
