Otis Wickenhaeuser

1931 - 2009, Santa Barbara

4/25/1931 to 9/26/2009

Born in New York City, Otis' early education was on the East Coast and in Italy and Austria. He and his parents, Hans and Marghretta Otis Wickenhaeuser, returned to the states in 1946 and made Santa Barbara home.

A graduate of The Thacher School and Pomona College, he was a gifted teacher who shared his love of learning and language in the classrooms of the Ojai Valley, Howard and Cleveland schools as well as in the many places he served for The Experiment in International Living.

Otis is survived by his wife of 42 years, JoAnn, their son John, daughter in law Lori, and grandchildren James and Claire. A gathering to remember this talented writer, painter, singer, linguist and protector of flora and fauna will be in the chapel at Santa Barbara Cemetery on Friday, October 30 at 2p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ojai Valley School, Lobero Theatre or Foodbank of Santa Barbara.

Mr. Wick, as we used to call him at Howard School, was the single most amazing teacher I have ever had. He was the only one who spotted my potential and rode me everyday until I lived up to his expectations. I can still conjugate verbs in Latin because of him, and can write a mean Language Arts paper that he would be proud of today.
The world has lost a truly gifted and talented teacher. My sincerest regrets to the family....
