Barbara "Bobbie" Kline
1939 - 2009, Santa Barbara
Bobbie Kline, long-time nursing and hospital professional, lost her well-fought battle against cancer, but she will forever be remembered for her vibrant spirit and caring heart. Bobbie, originally from South Dakota, graduated from St. Vincent's College of Nursing in Los Angeles, and began her 44 year-long nursing career in 1960 at UCLA's Pediatric Department.
A year later Bobbie moved to Santa Barbara, where she worked for 24 years at Santa Barbara's Cottage Hospital, rising to the rank of Nursing Director in the Emergency Department. During this time, she also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Management from the University of La Verne. In 1995, Bobbie was promoted to Vice-President of the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, where she was well respected by her staff and co-workers.
Bobbie retired in 2004, and became an active volunteer for many community interest groups. She served as a board member for Hospice of Santa Barbara, Association of California Nurse Leaders, Emergency Nurses Association, Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital Auxiliary, and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital Foundation. Bobbie was most proud of creating the Cottage Hospital Junior Volunteers Program.
Bobbie was an outstanding nurse, and a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, and friend. She is survived by her husband John, brother Wally, sister Jackie, children Dina, Randy, and Kari; grandchildren Nicole, Bryce, Brianna, Rainee, Gordon, and Fia; and her beloved terrier Jorge. Bobbie was preceded in death by her first husband Gordon; sisters Shirley, Judy, and Donna; and her terrier Tuffy. Bobbie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Bobbie was grateful for the high level of care she received at Cottage Hospital during her illness. Her family would especially like to thank Cottage Hospital's ER and ICU doctors and staff for their care and compassion.
A Memorial Service will be held at Holy Cross Church, 1740 Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara at 10 AM on January 8, 2010. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara or Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital Foundation.
