Maurine Parker passed away peacefully on December 27 in the evening. She was very frail at the time. Maurine lived a full and busy life and was known in Santa Barbara for her activism and her stand against wars. She loved going to Peace Marches.

At the time of her death Maurine was 100 years old. She was born in Sheldon, Missouri and grew up in a Sears prefabricated house. She went to college and got a job teaching but didn’t like it, so she studied for and passed the Civil Service exam the moved to Washington DC. In 1937 Maurine married Sid Laurens, moved to Flint, Michigan where she gave birth to her son David who had a heart condition all his life. Maurine remarried to Stewart Parker in l957. Her son David died the following year at the age of 18.

Maurine lived in MD, Mass then Pennsylvania where she became involved with the Quakers. In 1977 she took a job at the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, Japan for 2 years, after which she lived in Honolulu, Hawaii before moving to SB in 1982.

In Santa Barbara Maurine was active in the Society of Friends (Quakers). She was also a part of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She was actively involved in peace marches, protests against the use of weapons such as they employ at Vandenburg Air Force base in Lompoc and antiwar protests. Maurine was an avid swimmer but as she became older Maurine’s physical activity slowed but not her passion.

She will be remembered as a fighter for world peace. At her request, there will be no services.
