Esther O’Dell Pjerrou Smith

Esther O’Dell Pjerrou Smith, daughter of John and Odelia Pjerrou passed away on August 18, 2011 in Santa Barbara, California. Esther was born in Cheyenne Wyoming on November 20th 1917.

Esther’s early years were spent in Cheyenne but as the Great Depression neared, her father moved the family to California. Esther attended schools in Southern California and spent her free time reading and exploring her new surroundings. In 1935 she met James Vincent Smith. They were married in August 1937. Esther and Vincent had five children: Donald, Vincent, Martha, Trayce, and David. They also have five grandchildren: Cara, Mike, Mathew, Brandon, Erin and three great grandchildren: Ella, Ava, and Mattea.

Esther was a remarkable person with many great qualities. Determination, organization and love for life helped her accomplish many things during her 94 years. She was very much in love with Vincent and her children. She spent countless hours nurturing her family. She was an exceptional baker, prolific reader and curious about all aspects of life. Her later years were filled with activities, friends and travel. Her favorite past times included Golf, Dancing, Bridge and Dominoes. Esther and Vincent were also members of the Santa Barbara Elks. Her favorite travel destinations included China, New Zealand, South America, Canada, Hawaii, camping up the coast of California and the American South West. Esther will always be remembered for saying….”I thoroughly enjoyed myself!”

Esther’s family would like to thank her many friends and acquaintances for all the love and support she received. The family would also like to thank Villa Santa Barbara and the Hospice Nurses of Santa Barbara for Esther’s exceptional care during the last days of her life.

Esther’s memorial will be held Friday, August 26 at 11:30 am at the McDermott-Crockett Mortuary Chapel, 2020 Chapala St. Santa Barbara, 93105
