Frances J. Stephens

1926 - 2011, Santa Barbara

12/29/1926 - 12/06/2011

Frances Stephens, a longtime Santa Barbara resident, died Tuesday, December 6 in Santa Cruz. She was married to the poet and UCSB professor Alan Stephens for 60 years. With uncommon grace, she provided a happy home for him and their three sons, and good company for many friends and San Roque neighbors. For years she volunteered at Head Start and the Peabody School Library. Capable, modest, and steady, she lived lightly, laughed easily, and knew the trails, the birds, and the wildflowers.

Late in 2010, Fran was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She felt lucky to have had a full and active life. She went peacefully, under the care of her family. She is survived by her brother, Rod Jones of Tulsa; her sons Alan, Dan, and Tim; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Services will be private.
