05/04/1918 - 05/09/2011

After a fall in her home, June Ruth Chapin died peacefully at Cottage Hospital on May 9th at the age of 93.

June was born on May 4, 1918 in the city of Western, Nebraska, the only child of Wilbur and Lela Phillips. The family moved to South Carolina in the early 1950's, and also lived in New England. At Mrs. Devereux's invitation, June accepted the opportunity to join the faculty at the Devereux School in Goleta. She became a popular and respected teacher of children and adolescents with emotional, developmental, educational and cognitive challenges.

In her retirement years, June and her husband, Claire, took memorable cruises, played golf and loved to dress up for a dance night out. After Claire's death in 1990 June moved from New Horizons's Community in Goleta to Valle Verde. She was a savvy card player, enjoyed her patio garden, shopping and community activities.

June maintained a close and special friendship with her cousin, Lucile Bonsall, who died in 2003. June is survived by Chip and Holly Chapin of Oakland, Ca., Patricia Jones of Florida, her loving friend of many years Terry Yandell of Santa Barbara, and friends from throughout her life.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 28th at 2pm in the Social Room at Valle Verde.

A private interment has taken place at the Goleta Cemetery.
