Sibyl Wilma Holder

1915 - 2012, Santa Barbara

Sibyl Wilma Holder, born June 8, 1915, died June 2, 2012 at home in Santa Barbara, Calif. Widow of Julius Holder who died in 1994. Predeceased by her sister Lorna McComie, Trinidad, West Indies, and her brother Kenneth Apack, London, England.

Born, raised, and educated in Port of Spain, Trinidad where she worked at the Imperial College. Cared for her nieces Palma Diaz de Tuesta, Zaragoza, Spain, Myrna Holden, Berkeley, and Carole Roach, deceased, Alexandria, Virginia, while her sister Ursa Chow Quan, Port of Spain, Trinidad, supported her husband Francis in his medical studies in Washington D.C. Met and married Julius Holder of Brooklyn, New York, in 1956.

Arrived in Santa Barbara in 1959, at the behest of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Retired from the Center in 1979. Since her retirement, an active volunteer in the homeless community. A constant and devoted member of the congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church. Aunt Sibyl was a gentle woman of modest nature, sweet temperament, and strong character, admired by many, and loved by all who knew her.

Funeral service at Trinity Episcopal Church, Saturday June 9, at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Graveside service at Goleta Cemetery, Monday June 11, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Community Kitchen at Casa Esperanza, and Transition House, both of Santa Barbara.
