William (Bill) Gordon Morez

1925 - 2011, Santa Barbara

In loving memory
of my husband

10/16/1925 – 6/13/2011

with this tribute and permission from Wayne Forte, a former art student of his at San Marcos High School.

"Bill Morez came into my life as a father figure at a time when I was transitioning into adulthood and really needed support and affirmation. He was alas living proof that a man could be a highway patrolman and also an artist, an athlete who was passionate about classical music, an authority figure who could also play with toys and model planes.

Even as high school students he respected our intelligence too much to tell us what to believe. Instead he would gently challenge our preconceived notions to get us to think harder and better.

I remember so well the time he took our whole art class by bus to the Otis Art Institute in L.A. to see a Sam Francis Exhibit. Sam only painted the perimeter of his canvases and left the middle blank. We were perplexed and some us outraged. Only many years later did I find out that Bill didn’t like Modern Art. But like it or not he wanted us exposed to it so we could make up our own minds.

I take comfort knowing that Bill lives on through his many students whose hearts and minds he touched by his artistic talent, his optimistic attitude and above all, with his passion for life. I will never forget him."

Nor will we, his family and friends.
