Descendant of several of the earliest American pioneer families in this country. 1936 graduate of Santa Barbara high School who, in 1937, began her working career as an apprentice cosmetologist. She later purchased an established business from her employer and became a successful businesswoman, in her own right, as a beautician for 46 years.

Married to Marshall Ney Hicks in 1939, she raised two sons (Fred and George) and two daughters (Marsha and Margie).
