Kathleen Mary Polischuk

1944 - 2018

After a lengthy illness, Kathleen Mary Polischuk, 74, died on May 4, 2018.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1944 as the first child of Mary and Fred Scheck, Kathleen attended Ridley Park High School where she carried the American flag in the school band, an honor she cherished. Driven by her love for helping others, she attended nursing school in Darby, PA, where she was taught by the Sisters of Mercy. She married and moved to Lompoc in 1966. She lived the remainder of her life in Santa Barbara County, vowing, “I will never shovel snow again!”

She worked various nursing jobs before settling in at Cottage Hospital in 1982. She was known as the nurse who gave small angel items to provide comfort. She was a recipient of the Bialis Family Foundation Award for Nursing Excellence. She was hard-working, outgoing, and always had a cheerful and encouraging word for anyone she met. In her retirement, her role didn’t change, compassionately caring for family and friends.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, her garden, and traveling with friends. She loved her family deeply and was grateful to live close to her daughter’s family. Tracing genealogy was an ongoing project.

Kathleen is survived by her loving daughter Carrie Johns (Darren), 2 granddaughters, and 2 granddogs of Goleta, sister Rosemary Reinerth and brother Fred (Cindy) Scheck of New Jersey, nieces, nephews, many dear cousins, and wonderful friends.

Services at the Goleta Chapel of Welch-Ryce-Haider will be held on Saturday, May 19, 10am, at 450 Ward Drive. Please no black clothing per her wishes. Kathleen’s ashes will be laid to rest in a family plot in Pennsylvania at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of the following charities in honor of her dedication to helping others: Habitat for Humanity or Domestic Violence Solutions.

Kathleen and her family would like to thank the staff of Cottage Health System, Mission Terrace, and Serenity House for their care. Special thanks to the incredible and extremely dedicated team at Serenity House that supported her in her final months.
