Alan Shapiro

Alan Shapiro died suddenly and tragically on Saturday July 14th trying to save his beloved dog, Sable. He was struck by a train in Carpinteria behind his store, Blackeyed Susans and Salt. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Robin, step daughter Jennifer, grandson Rowan, 2 sisters; Joni and Sandy, his mother, Hetty and hundreds of devoted friends.
Alan, also known as Iggy-Angie- Stitch- Gumba- Boy- Viking boy- Ally and A Brother from Another Mother-lived in Los Angeles for many years working in the furniture business until he resettled with Robin in Santa Barbara 25 years ago. He owned, with Robin, the clothing store Swept Away until he opened his present store.
Alan traveled extensively in Central America and had a love of the Rasta. He was a musicologist and a lover of films. He spent as much time as he could in his garden and left behind thousands of blooming flowers in a peaceful sanctuary.
He will be severely missed and always remembered, repeatedly imitated and continually honored as a gentleman, a hero, a cowboy and an extreme individual.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Santa Barbara Humane Society in Sable’s name.
A private memorial service is being held.
