City of Death

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara native Joe Itsuki Mori, age 86, passed away peacefully in sleep into the hands of our Lord early Sunday morning, August 2 after a brief illness. He lived in his beloved Santa Barbara all his life, with the exception of the years of forced evacuation of Japanese Americans during WWII. Although he did not see combat then, he took pride in serving in the US Army during the reconstruction in postwar Japan. Raised on a farm on the Mesa, he witnessed the change into the city we see today.

Joe, along with his older brother Frank, began, owned, and ran Kata Shi Nursery in Goleta for many years. After retiring, he pursued his passion for Japanese antiques and started a second business. His generous side is reflected in his dedication to the Meals on Wheels organization, where he was on the board for three years and a driver for 25. His long involvement with Bethany and the Free Methodist Churches was especially meaningful to him.

He is survived by his beloved bride of 59 years, Kikkie Mori, his sons Forrest and Paul, his daughter-in-law Priscilla, and his precious granddaughter Sarah.

Services will be held on August 22, at 2:00 pm at Bethany Congregational Church, 556 N. Hope Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to SB Meals on Wheels.
