Robert “Bruce” Love, 71 died Thursday October 29, 2009 of natural causes in Grand Junction, Colorado en route to Boulder.

He is survived by his wife, Vickie Hawks Love of Santa Barbara, sons Robert and wife Mila of Chicago, lIlinois, Todd of Portland, Oregon and daughter Jennifer Love Gauthier and her husband Greg, of Boulder, Colorado, step-son Carter Myers, also of Santa Barbara and grandchildren Wren, Sophia, Ethan and Willow. He was preceded in death by his parents Rex C. and Magdalene Love and his wife of thirty seven years, Betty Jo Singleton Love, the mother of his children. He is also survived by siblings: Rex Love, Barbara Love Wells, Jane Dickinson and Timothy Love, as well as a number of nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

Bruce grew up in Canon City, Colorado and graduated high school at St. Benedict’s Abbey. He attended college at the Unviersity of Colorado at Boulder and graduated with honours and degrees in both engineering and engineering physics. He studied with George Gamow, the originator of the Big Bang theory and went on to a distinguished career. His research work in plasma physics and thin film technology lead to seven patented inventions. These patents included computer disk coating enhancements which facilitated the enormous capacity and performance of the disks in our computers today. In addition to computer technology he made significant contributions in solar, aerospace and architectural glass coating processes. He retired in 2002. He worked and traveled all over the world and was proud to make Santa Barbara his home, where he lived since 1989.

He was a lifelong advocate for conservation of the environment, alternative energy, public radio and television, individual liberties and democratic politics. He loved to read, travel, walk and spend time with his family.

A memorial service will held at 1:00 PM this Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Our Lady of Sorrows on the corner of Anacapa and Sola streets. In lieu of flowers the family would like to suggest donations to an environmental project or cause such as www.theclimateproject.org or the Sierra Club.
