Elbert “Shorty” Garrett

Elbert Garrett also known as “Shorty” to many, and by his niece Heidi as “SHORTY DO” has passed away at the age of 78. Elbert Garrett was born August 1st, 1931 at sunrise, to the late Mr. John Shelly Garrett and Mrs. Mary Rosetta of Talladega, Alabama. He had three brothers and two sisters.

In 1957, Shorty moved with his cousin Fred W. Garrett (Newt) to Santa Barbara, CA. There he worked in construction. In 1978, his four cousins opened their own family business, 4 G’s Construction where he worked until he retired in the late 1980s.

Elbert Garrett was called home September 28th, 2010, at sunset, after a lengthy illness. He leaves to mourn, three brothers and two sisters, Zack Garrett, Cleothus Garrett, Joe “Smiley” Garrett, Mae Lee Wilson, all of Talladega, Alabama, one sister, Gloria Cleora Garrett, who preceded him in death, two cousins, Fred W. Garrett, of Santa Barbara, CA, Leola Burleigh of Santa Maria, CA, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Shorty will be greatly missed by all that loved and knew him.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday October 9th, 2010 at 11am at the Greater Hope Baptist Church 430 East Figueroa St. Santa Barbara, CA 93103. In lieu of flowers and donations please call (805) 452-3806.
