Evangeline McFadden, 90 years old, passed away peacefully at Sarah House from complications related to Alzheimer’s on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Born in Philadelphia, to an Irish mother Catherine (McCabe) and an Italian father Eli Vezzosi, she attended St. Carthage’s grade school and Villa Maria Academy for her secondary education. Van graduated from Immaculata College in 1941 with a B.S. in Commercial Education. During WWII she worked in the ship yards of Philadelphia and in 1943 she married Edward ‘Mac’ McFadden, who preceded her in death (7.1.75).

A voracious reader, gardener, lover of nature, animals and theatre, Van dabbled in painting, stained glass and upholstery arts. She entered the work force as a social worker for the Department of Public Assistance in Philadelphia, and then relocated to Chester County office to continue working for the state until her retirement in the mid-80s. She lived in Drexel Hill for more than 30 years. In 1987, she moved to Santa Barbara to be near her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy McCool, (husband Tom) of Lawrenceville, NJ and Maureen McFadden of Santa Barbara, in addition to her four grandsons, Thomas (Coatesville, PA), Kevin (Santa Rosa, CA) and Christopher McCool (Buellton, CA), and Eli McFadden (Santa Barbara, CA) along with six great-grandchildren – Chelsea, Megan, Matthew, Emma, Jessica and Keegan. She lived for her family and enjoyed a full life.

Memorial Service will take place at McDermott-Crocker Mortuary, 2020 Chapala Street, Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 12 at 11 am. (805)569-2424.
