After surveying beaches along the Gaviota Coast, UCSB research biologist Jenifer Dugan (pictured) has found the sand in front of seawall structures to be eerily absent of decomposing kelp and seaweed-a phenomenon that threatens to undermine the entire beach food chain, from macroinvertebrates to shore birds.
