A LIVER LEGACY: During World War II, Santa Barbara's shark fishery exploded, as the military sought the fish's livers for vitamin A that was believed to give better nighttime vision to pilots. During the peak of the slaughter, more than 2,000 sharks were being hauled out of the channel each day.
