FIGURING OUT THE FUTURE: On Wednesday, November 16, after six previous meetings, the County Planning Commission (pictured) is scheduled to make its final decision on the Eastern Goleta Valley's next 20 years. Critics have grumbled that commission is changing too much of what a previous committee already approved after 38 meetings. But that's the way it works, says the county's long range planning director Jeff Hunt. “We have to respect the planning process,” he said. “The Planning Commision isn't just there to rubberstamp a product. What's the benefit of that?”

GROWING OPPOSITION: Barb Kloos (right) has lived in the Eastern Goleta Valley for 25 years, but is “very, very nervous” that the region's semi-rural lifestyle could change because the state is forcing the county to consider changing farmland into high density housing. She, Terri Ortega (at left), and others involved with the Eastern Goleta Valley Coalition also fear proposed secondary uses for the remaining ag lands, such as bed-and-breakfasts. “This is a huge policy,” said Kloos. “It's not like you want to add 10 parking space at Vons.”
