A.H., age 16, has been in the Miami-Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Center for eight months. He is reading Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. He is here on two counts of murder, rape, and assault. He says he has been in 20-25 fights while here. He stabbed his sister, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s friend, killing the boyfriend and the friend. He spent time in Citrus, a mental hospital, after the crime. He blames his violence on his father, who abused him by burning his hands, electrocuting him, and beating him with a baseball bat. He says his older brother was shot and bled to death in his arms. He might be sent to an adult prison. Nobody visits.
