TRAGEDY ON A NORTHBOUND TRAIN: One of the deadliest rail accidents in Santa Barbara's history occurred in the early 1900s on the coast between Point Arguello and Surf beach. Thirty-two people died when a passenger train jumped the tracks, taking on the aspect of a collapsing spyglass. Investigators from San Luis Obispo and S.B. counties could not determine the cause, which remains a mystery today.
