Many historians consider the Wounded Knee uprising in 1973 a defining moment in the modern history of American Indians. Unfortunately, much of the 71-day armed confrontation was lost to history after the Feds barred the media from reaching the besieged village. For the last six weeks of the conflict, Kevin McKiernan was the only journalist inside Wounded Knee.
