ROUGH TIMES: Through the 1850s, Santa Barbara boasted 50 saloons and witnessed a proliferation of bandit gangs, like the one run by Jack Powers, also an Irish immigrant. Nicholas Den would run Powers out of town; not long after, Powers was stabbed to death, and his body fed to pigs.
