LAST COWBOYS: The Vail and Vickers families owned Santa Rosa Island for most of the 20th century, basing cattle operations out of the main ranch on Bechers Bay and running cattle off of the Vaquero II (above). Their cowboy lifestyle came to an end when they were forced off the island to make way for Channel Islands National Park.
