It’s illegal in California to purchase an AR-15 rifle like this one owned by a Santa Barbara resident because it has a collapsible stock, pistol grip, and muzzle flash suppressor that violate the state’s assault-weapon laws. But buyers can simply get a legal “featureless” rifle; purchase the stock, grip, and flash suppressor separately; and install the components themselves. It’s a loophole in the law that DA Joyce Dudley said needs to be fixed.
