TRAGEDY AND CONSEQUENCES: A memorial sits in remembrance of Alan Garcia and Elizabeth Contreras, who were struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross Las Positas Road one Saturday night in January. Witnesses got the license plate number of the van, and Jon Peters, a convicted sex offender, was tracked down using his electronic monitoring device. After pleading guilty, he got five years in prison.

Corey Lyons saw his first time in front of a jury end in a mistrial on December 14. Lyons is accused of murdering his brother Daniel and brother’s partner, Barbara Scharton, at their Mesa home, which he built for them. He’ll be back in court in 2011.

Adrian Robles, on the other hand, is accused of murdering a man he didn’t know at all — after an argument at Hendry’s Beach, Robles allegedly stabbed Robert “Bobby-I” Simpson and fled, avoiding authorities for a time. But he was caught a week later and will head to trial in the coming year.

Meanwhile, tattooed homeboy Ruben Mize, at the not-so-tender age of 19, has been busy making a name for himself with violent attacks on Santa Barbara’s streets. The Eastside gang member has already been convicted of two attempted murders for stabbing assaults and faces two more attempted murder charges, as well as a murder charge for the 2007 killing of Lorenzo Carachure.
