New Book Applies 13th-Century Religious Maverick’s Ideas to Modern Times
Though he lived in the thirteenth century, Meister Eckhart’s teachings were in many ways modern. Like Rumi, his thinking was deeply ecumenical, encompassing wisdom that one can find in Jewish, Sufi, Buddhist, and Hindu mystical traditions as well as in shamanism and indigenous spirituality.
Eckhart advocated for social, economic, and gender justice; championed an earth-based spirituality and a cosmic consciousness, and taught how we are all artists whose vocation is to birth the Cosmic Christ (or Buddha Nature). All these elements influenced celebrated bestselling author Matthew Fox’s Creation Spirituality and inspired him to write the enclosed review copy of the new book Meister Eckhart: A Mystic Warrior for Our Times (New World Library, July 1, 2014).
While Fox recognizes that Eckhart has influenced everyone from Julian of Norwich to Eckhart Tolle, Karl Marx to Carl Jung, and Annie Dillard to Anne Morrow Lindbergh, he also wants to introduce Eckhart to today’s activists addressing contemporary crises. Toward that end, Fox creates dialogues between Eckhart and Carl Jung, Thich Nhat Hanh, Rabbi Heschel, Black Elk, Karl Marx, Rumi, Adrienne Rich, Dorothee Soelle, David Korten, Anita Roddick, and many others.
“Eckhart helps to carry us to this new level of evolution, this deeper expression of what it means to be human at this time in history. He asks that we live in depth, not superficially, whether we are talking about religion, education, economics, or ecology,” writes Fox. “Once we grasp the heart of Eckhart’s teachings we will find that they take us away from sterile and external religion to a deep spirituality, one that will imbue every dimension of our conscience and consciousness.”
