SANTA BARBARA, Calif., June 3, 2014 –Today,theAce Hardware Corp.,
a dealer owned cooperative and the industry’s largest hardware co-op, is pleased
to announce the Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center as the second largest volume store nationwide out of its more than 4,200 stores and the top volume store in the western United States.
Today, leadership from the Ace Hardware Corp. headquartered in Oakbrook, Ill., including Vice President of Retail Operations and New Business Kane Calamari,Western Division Manager Natalie Sender and District Manager Charlie Kukla will recognize Owner Gary Simpson and his store’s associates with a very special plaque.
“The Home Improvement Center has been steadily gaining in volume particularly over the last 10 years,”Kukla said.“Simpson’s store excels in nearly every key merchandising category in the home improvement industry.”
For Simpson and the family business, this is an unbelievable honor.“I owe it to my wonderful staff that consistently provides Santa Barbara with a very broad selection of product consisting of 65,000 different items and, above all, the friendliest and most knowledgeable customer service in the area.”

Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center was founded in 1967 by Gary’s father, Kenneth Roy Jr., as a subsidiary to the family’s then contractor lumber yard, Santa Barbara Mill and Lumber.The senior Mr. Simpson passed away in 1976 and Gary took over the operations of the store in 1983.With the passing of his mother,Eleanor Simpson,in 2008,Gary became the store’s owner.Simpson said,“We continue daily with our philosophy of providing the absolute best customer service we can while maintaining the personal feel of one of Santa Barbara’s premier hometown stores.”
Lastly, Simpson would like to thank Ace Hardware for all that it has done over the many years to help us become what we are. “Their supply chain of product and best business practices are the very best in the industry bar none,”Simpson said.“We are proud to be a part of Ace and look for our relationship to grow and continue for many years down the road.”
As a successful business in the community, Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center strongly believes in giving back and does so through broad and steady gifting to nonprofits in the area. Simpson told of the Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center’s largest gift some years back toTransition House in the amount of $250,000,recently to Unity Shoppe for $50,000 and annual sponsorship donations to Hospice of Santa Barbara, Girls Incorporated of Greater Santa Barbara and Domestic Violence Solutions just to name a few. Simpson said,“Day in and day out we are proud to help our community with requests big and small.”
