Summer Solstice Celebration

Summer Solstice Celebration announced that “Sci-Fi” is the theme for the 41st annual Solstice Parade on June 20, 2015.

Solstice reached out to the community via social media, Facebook and email — receiving hundreds of submissions for ideas for the theme. “Sci-Fi” was selected out of five runners’ up. The custom of choosing themes started in 1979 with the Theme of “Children”. Some of the favorite themes over the years have included 2013 “Creatures”, 2011“Jungle”, 2002“Circus” 1995 “Toys, contraptions & thingamajigs” 1990 “The Sea” The final decision as to the theme is made by the Solstice Board of Directors at their monthly meeting.

In January 2015 artists are encouraged to submit artwork for the t-shirt and poster design competition. From the early fliers and posters created by Michael Gonzales to a legion of artists in Santa Barbara, each year artists have vied for the privilege to have their design represent the Summer Solstice Celebration. The collection of artwork takes place on the 30th of January with the work being on display at Sojourner Café for the three weeks including a reception during the first Thursday in February.

Executive Director, Claudia Bratton, says “With a theme like this we’re expecting an out of this world response with fabulous, amazing creative floats, giant puppets from who knows where. Boldly go where your imagination has not gone before! Let’s go back to the future again.”
