Special Olympics Santa Barbara to Host
Annual Regional Soccer Tournament 2nd
100 Athletes Expected to Compete at Girsh Park
Santa Barbara, CA, October 2014 - Special Olympics Santa Barbara will host the Second Annual Regional Soccer Tournament at Girsh Park in Goleta on Sunday, October 26th. Two local Santa Barbara teams will compete against eight other teams from Lompoc, Santa Maria, Santa Clarita and Ventura in an exciting day of competition.
The public is invited to attend Opening Ceremonies beginning at 9am and cheer on our athletes during their competition. “The tournament is a great example of the strength of the Santa Barbara community and the spirit of Special Olympics.” says Tim Philbosian, Regional Sports Manager. Awards presentations will be on-going beginning at 11:30am and ending at 1:30pm.
Over 70 community volunteers from the Westmont Women’s Soccer Team, Health Professions Association of UCSB, National Charity League and Santa Barbara County Probation Department will assist in the organization and management of the tournament. The tournament is also made possible by Title Sponsors Fidelity National Title and Chicago Title of Santa Barbara and event sponsors Girsh Park, Granite Construction, Jensen Audiovisual, Starbucks and Jordano’s.
Special Olympics Santa Barbara serves over 400 children and adults with intellectual disabilities through year-round sports training and competition opportunities in ten sports. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate
courage, and experience joy.
