Local Poets to Read from their Works at SB Public Library

Six Local Poets to Read from Their Work
Quattro Forma Plus Two at the Central Library

Santa Barbara, CA – September 8, 2014. The Santa Barbara Public Library will host poets David Starkey, Chella Courington, Terre Ouwehand, Alice Scharper, Lana Rose, and Jim Chesher, who will read from their works on Saturday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m. in the Central Library’s Faulkner Gallery. All six poets work at or are retired from Santa Barbara City College. The Central Library is located at 40 E. Anapamu St. in Santa Barbara.

David Starkey, Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Emeritus, teaches Creative Writing at Santa Barbara City College and has published several books of poetry. Chella Courington also teaches Creative Writing at SBCC and is also a published poet. Quattro Forma is the recent anthology that includes poems by Terre Ouwehand, English instructor at SBCC, Alice Sharper, Dean at SBCC, Lana Rose, retired from Counseling, and Jim Chesher retired from Philosophy. Cover art and inside imagery are done by artists Nina Warner and Pamela Zwehl-Burke, both of whom have retired from SBCC’s Art Department. David Starkey and Chella Courington join the “Quattros” and make it the “Big Six” for this reading.

The reading is free and open to the public, and there is a hearing loop installed in the Faulkner Gallery for the hearing impaired. Chella Courington
Chella Courington teaches Creative Writing at Santa Barbara City College. Her prose and poetry have appeared in numerous journals.

J. E. Chesher
Jim Chesher is content to watch and wonder. He prefers the opening door of a question to the slamming shut of most answers.

Terre Ouwehand
Terre Ouwehand is also known in Santa Barbara as a playwright. She created Old Hand Press.

Lana Rose
Lana Rose fills her post-retirement life with many avenues of self-expression, including cooking, sewing, photography, drawing, and writing.

Alice Sharper
Alice Scharper works at SBCC as a dean of education, has collaborated on two documentary play productions, and enjoys writing poetry and spending lots of time outdoors.

David Starkey
David Starkey served as Santa Barbara’s 2009-2010 Poet Laureate and is Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College. His poetry has appeared in many journals.
