The Lark Announces Susan Owens Winner of Clipboard Design Contest

THE LARK ANNOUNCES LOCAL ARTIST SUSAN OWENS AS
WINNER OF CLIPBOARD DESIGN CONTEST

Santa Barbara Artists Submit 45 Original Works; Owens’ “Meadowlark” Takes the Prize

WHO:
The Lark, Santa Barbara

WHAT:
The Lark, Santa Barbara’s acclaimed and most talked about restaurant in the Funk Zone announces that local Santa Barbara artist Susan Owens has won the clipboard design contest with her salvaged tin can collage titled “Meadowlark.”

As part of the restaurant’s ongoing commitment to the extraordinary talent of artists in Santa Barbara, The Lark invited interested artists of all ages and experience to create an original work on a 5” x 8” wooden board, provided by the restaurant. 45 original works were submitted by local artists. All of the boards will be used in the restaurant as check presenters bringing Santa Barbara’s finest talent directly in front of guests.

After reviewing all of the artists’ completed work, The Lark’s employees selected Susan Owen’s “Meadowlark” for its design and originality as the winner and will receive dinner for two at The Lark as the grand prize.

Owens’s creations are small “eco-chic” tin collages out of salvaged lithographed tin (steel) cans from around the globe which are generally used to package food and then forgotten. Owens selected the Meadowlark for her LARK piece, choosing images, colors and patterns from her broad collection. She then cut, bent and overlapped the pieces until the image is complete. To finish, she nailed the pieces to the wooden base using small brass brads and added a smooth epoxy resin to increase functionality.

“What I like best about this Meadowlark is the transformation of a grocery store Danish cookie tin into the feathers of the bird. The little Tudor style buildings and thatched roofs from the tin make a great brown and white pattern,” states Owens. Included in the collage are a Danish feta cheese tin, an Israeli tahini tin and a Trader Joe’s cookie tin to complete the background. A Turkish tea tin filled out the body.

Owens has been making tin pieces for several years. She initially made 5x5 inch pieces for the Annual “Buddha Abides” Show in Santa Barbara produced by Lark Batteau. Her pieces may be purchased at Raoul and two are on permanent display at Metropulos Fine Food, both located in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara. Although the competition is complete with winner Susan Owens, artists are still invited to create a board for use in the restaurant. The Lark is enthusiastic to share their talents with hundreds of diners each week and to celebrate the originality of the Funk Zone. Boards may be picked up at the restaurant between 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.p. daily while supplies last; entries will be accepted any time.
