78th Annual Solvang Danish Days is This Weekend: 9/19-21/14

Solvang, California, USA— Come be a Dane this weekend! The charitable Solvang Danish Days Foundation ( ) is coordinating the 78th Annual Danish Days from Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21, 2014. The theme this year is “Sunny Fields of Dreams!” The three-day event honors the establishment of Solvang by Danish-Americans in 1911 and helps preserve Solvang’s authentic Danish heritage. Admission is free and thousands of residents and visitors enjoy the celebration each year. During the Danish Days celebration, Denmark and USA flags line the streets, residents and visitors don colorful costumes, and there is food, folk dancing and free entertainment throughout the weekend. You can enjoy three parades (Friday night Torchlight; Saturday afternoon Main Parade and Sunday afternoon Children’s Parade.)

At the Friday night opening ceremonies, meet 2014 Danish Days Maid Angelique Heron. Then, see world famous folk artist Eric Dowdle, host of Public Television’s “Painting the Town with Eric Dowdle,” who’ll present the premiere of his new 30-minute TV show “Painting the Town: Solvang” and unveil his new, original painting, “Solvang, Danish Village.”

There’s a delicious aebleskiver breakfast followed by an aebleskiver eating contest on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Experience “living history” at the Elverhoj Museum on Saturday and Sunday. The Danish-style Beer & Wine Garden serves Carlsberg, local brews and wines on Friday night and Saturday. On Saturday and Sunday, check out The Ravens of Odin, a professional Viking re-enactment group creates an authentic camp in Solvang Park adjacent to the Kids’ Korner featuring a huge LEGOS ® make-your-own craft tent plus free concerts including Manne (Danish duo straight from Denmark). The Solvang 2nd Century Party features free, live local bands in concert on Saturday from 5:00-10:00 p.m. on the Midgaard Pavilion Stage, 1639 Copenhagen Drive. Favorite activities year-round include enjoying the authentic restaurants and bakeries featuring tasty Danish cuisine, including aebleskiver (Danish pastry balls) and medisterpølse (Danish sausage).
