SUPERIOR COURT JUDGES ELECT PATRICIA KELLY AS ASSISTANT PRESIDING JUDGE
Santa Barbara, California, September 19, 2014 – The Judges of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara unanimously elected Judge Patricia Kelly as their incoming Assistant Presiding Judge for the term beginning January 2015 and concluding December 31, 2016. The election took place at a Countywide Judges meeting conducted in Solvang, California at 1:15 p.m. on Friday September 19, 2014.
The election is timed early enough in the calendar year to allow the new Assistant Presiding Judge to attend the annual Presiding Judge and Court Executive Management meeting conducted in November of each year.
Judge Kelly was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger, on August 10, 2010. She currently serves as the Supervising Judge of the Criminal Division in the Northern Santa Barbara County Division in Santa Maria.
Current Presiding Judge Arthur Garcia said, “Judge Kelly is an outstanding jurist with a proven track record and keen administrative acumen. The citizens of Santa Barbara County will be well served by her in her new role as Assistant Presiding Judge.”
Judge James Herman currently serves as the Assistant Presiding Judge for the County Court and will be taking over the reigns as Presiding Judge in January 2015 when Judge Kelly begins her term as Assistant Presiding Judge. Judge Herman stated, “Having worked with Judge Kelly when I served in Santa Maria, I am confident we will make a strong team as we face the continued negative effects of funding cuts to the judicial branch. She has a strong command of issues facing the court in these challenging times; and she brings a special perspective to our court leadership as our first woman Assistant Presiding Judge. I am confident that she will thrive with her new responsibilities.”
