Seventeen year old Gracie Fisher is positively fearless despite the uncertainty she faces after being diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis in December. The sudden onset of this mysterious, polio-like illness paralyzed her from the neck down and put her on a respirator. After weeks in intensive care at Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital, Grace and her family are now at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Denver for specialized therapy. We had an opportunity to rejoice recently when we saw Grace lift her arm briefly for the first time! Her family sees her progress as this talented musician/singer gradually adds minutes to the time she can breathe without a respirator. Through it all, Grace is often seen smiling. That is the attitude of a winner, and we’re here to cheer!
On Sunday, April 26 from 9am to 5pm at San Marcos High School, hundreds of energetic Gracie fans will hit the track in symbolic support of Grace’s marathon recovery journey. Teams will collectively walk/run/skip 104 laps (104 laps = 26 miles = a marathon!). Some teams may choose to run in a relay, others will be walking in groups or shifts. It doesn’t matter if you are fast or slow; the goal is to complete the 26 miles as a team! Spirited activities are planned to encourage everyone to reach their goal.
The Race With Grace will be a fun-filled day for the entire family.
Live Music all day!
Haircuts by Arturo’s barbers
Nail & Hair Art by Aqua Nail Bar
Food and raffle prizes donated by local businesses
Video Station for messages to Gracie at each team’s completion!
Team costumes are encouraged!
Registration is free, but participants are encouraged to fundraise for the event. Participants with sponsorship of $104 or more will receive a souvenir Race With Grace tee shirt. All funds will contribute to the Fisher family’s purchase of an adaptive van needed when they return to Santa Barbara in May. Currently we have more than 20 teams and $17,000 raised. Our goal is to raise $55,000, so we need YOU to start or join a team and make a donation today!
