Club Receives Much Needed Support for Summer Science Lab
Santa Barbara, CA, July 15, 2015 – Edison International has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara. This funding directly benefits youths ages 6-12 – many who are at-risk and come from low or very-low income households – attending summer camp at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara and participating in its Summer Science Lab Program.
“Edison International is a valued educational community partner for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara,” said Carolyn Brown, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara. “We are so grateful our kids have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments throughout the summer thanks to Edison International.”
In addition to interactive activities, the Edison International grant helps address “summer slide,” the period when students tend to forget what they learned in their classes during the school year. The Summer Science Lab Program supports the Core Curriculum Standards Initiative in public schools. Students learn about processes and procedures and are graded on their reasons for their answers rather than the right answers. Science Lab follows this structure: children learn processes through hands-on experimentation; afterwards, they are quizzed to test their knowledge. Thanks to Edison International’s generosity, young people are encouraged to explore future careers in science and engineering.
