Bici Centro, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition’s popular Do It Yourself bike repair shop and communitycenter, is extending its hours for 2015. The shop—which offers stands, tools, and assistance from volunteer mechanics—is more than doubling its hours. Located at 434 Olive Street, Bici will now be open Wednesdays through Fridays from noon – 7 p.m. and Saturdays from noon – 5:00 p.m. All who’d like to work on their own bicycles—from tune-ups and general maintenance to larger-scale repairs or technical work like crankset replacement or wheel truing—are welcome to use the shop. Bici also offers a variety of affordable new and used parts. And while those with the know-how can rent a stand (which comes with tools) and work at their own pace, you don’t have to know what you’re doing to use Bici’s DIY stands. Volunteers will be on hand to help you learn about taking care of your own bike. Plus, the shop/community center is a great place to hang out for cyclists of all types and interest levels. While you’re there, find out about community cycling events, upcoming classes to improve your cycling or wrenching skills, and volunteer opportunities. Get involved with efforts to improve cycling and walking infrastructure throughout our county and make new friends. Increased demand, says Bici’s volunteer coordinator Joey Juhasz-Lukomski, is what prompted the extended hours. And he’s stoked about what the new hours will mean for customers and SBBIKE projects alike. The shop was previously not available for DIY wrenchers until 4:00, at which point there’d be a rush of patrons who were waiting to start their projects. The new hours will help with the flow and allow for bigger projects to be completed in one day. “If you’ve got something that might take all day,” says Juhasz-Lukomski, “you can hang out from noon to seven.”The extended hours will also be a plus for SBBIKE’s projects. Tuesdays are dedicated volunteer days, and these hours have been extended to noon – 7 p.m. as well. Juhasz-Lukomski says this will allow the person in charge to put less energy into assigning tasks when volunteers all rush in and greatly increase the output. Volunteers build and repair bikes for sale at the shop, which supports SBBIKE’s programs, and outreach Visit Bici Centro at 434 Olive Street. New hours are Wed, Thurs, Fri noon–7 p.m. and Sat noon–5 p.m. Or learn more online at www.sbbike.org.
