US 101 CASTILLO STREET PAVERS PROJECT BEGINS MONDAY, JULY 20
SANTA BARBARA – A project to improve roadway conditions on the US Highway 101 undercrossing at Castillo Street will begin on Monday, July 20. This project will include the installation of interlocking concrete pavers on Castillo Street and the on/off ramps to US Highway 101.
This project will improve the condition of the pavement where seeping groundwater has damaged the existing concrete pavement, resulting in potholes and a wet driving surface. The use of these interlocking pavers will allow the groundwater to drain while providing a smooth driving surface for motorists and bicyclists.
Pavement conditions have been a challenge at this location due to the intrusion of groundwater into the Castillo Street concrete slab below the freeway and railroad. Funding is not available to reconstruct the entire concrete slab as a permanent solution. This short term repair is intended to last five plus years, applying lessons learned from previous efforts. The result will be an improved driving and riding surface and a reduced need for ongoing maintenance.
· The southbound on-ramp to US Highway 101 from Castillo Street will be closed for a four week period beginning Monday, July 20.
· The southbound off-ramp at Castillo Street from US Highway 101 will be closed for a four-week period beginning, Friday. Aug. 14.
These ramp closures will not occur at the same time. Detour signs will be posted to assist motorists and bicyclists during this project.
One lane will remain open in each direction along Castillo Street at all times with motorists and
bicyclists must share the road as required by law. The contractor for this $873,000 project is Peterson Chase Construction of Irvine, CA.
It is expected to be completed in September. All businesses will remain open during this project.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
