On Sunday, July 26th Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center and Democratic Women of Santa Barbara County will be hosting a free screening of the 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground, a powerful exposé of the mishandling of sexual assault cases on college campuses across the country. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and representatives from local colleges.
The Hunting Ground comes at a key point in the public discussion of sexual assault, and is a scathing indictment of universities that prioritize their reputation and donor satisfaction over the safety of their students. In 2014, the Department of Education released a list of 55 colleges and universities under investigation for sexual assault-related violations of Title IX, an anti-discrimination statute. The list has since grown to include 106 institutions. This film calls upon legislators, alumni, donors, parents, and community members to hold universities accountable for enforcing sexual assault policies and for making student safety a priority.
This event is open to the public and will be held at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, located at 721 E. Cota St., from 1pm to 4pm.
