Fund for Santa Barbara Invests in Project to Address Sexual Assault in Isla Vista

Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center (SBRCC) is honored to be selected as the recipient of a multi-year grant awarded by The Fund for Santa Barbara. SBRCC will receive $10,000 per year for 3 years as part of a project to expand its services in the Isla Vista community, and ensure that the needs of both student and non-student residents are met. As Isla Vista’s remains an unincorporated area in Santa Barbara County, funding for critical services can be difficult to come by. Elsa Granados, Executive Director of SBRCC stated “We are very enthusiastic about being able to provide services to a part of our community that has historically been underserved.” Isla Vista is an ever-growing and evolving region, and it is paramount that services be tailored to fit the needs of its various demographics.

While SBRCC is dedicated to providing intervention and response services to all those in need, the organization views prevention education as an essential component of its efforts in Isla Vista. The primary focus of the nonprofit’s work in Isla Vista will be to address the root causes of sexual violence by increasing the visibility of this issue and engaging in dialogue about rape culture with local residents. Karen Villegas, Community Education Coordinator at SBRCC is particularly excited about the opportunities created by this funding source, “We see this project as a way of investing in the future of Isla Vista and helping the community reach its full potential.”

Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center has been providing counseling and support services to survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones for over 40 years. SBRCC is an inclusive organization that welcomes individuals of all gender identities, sexual orientations, races, classes, abilities, and ages. Confidential and bilingual advocacy services are available through their 24-hour hotline at 805-564-3696. SBRCC is proud to be able to continue broadening its reach, and is immensely grateful for the longtime support shown by The Fund for Santa Barbara.
