Animal Shelters Celebrate “Chihuahuas de Mayo” Free Spays & Neuters in May 2015

In celebration of “Chihuahuas de Mayo” Santa Barbara County owners of Chihuahuas and
Chihuahua mixes will be able to get their dogs spayed or neutered for free during the month of
May, 2015. Call today to schedule your appointment.
Free surgeries will be provided for the first 300 dogs signed up. This program is available to Santa Barbara County residents only. Owners should call one of the following organizations to schedule an appointment:
SB County Animal Services, Santa Maria Animal Center, at 805.934.6968
• Santa Maria Valley Humane Society at 805.349.3435
• Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society at 805.688.8224
• Santa Barbara Humane Society at 805.964.4777 ext.20
• Care4Paws at 805.968.CARE (2273)
Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes currently represent 30 percent of dogs living in area shelters. Chihuahuas de Mayo 2015 will increase the number of dogs that are spayed and neutered in the county and in turn help eliminate hundreds of unwanted dogs coming into our shelters each year.
“We are beginning to see the positive impacts of targeted Spay/Neuter promotions like Chihuahuas de Mayo. We continue to collaborate with our community partners and highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership,” says Jan Glick, Santa Barbara County’s Director of Animal Services. “We want to help pet owners who might not have the money to get their dogs fixed be responsible pet owners by spaying and neutering their Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes.”
Santa Barbara County Animal Services, Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, Santa Barbara Humane Society, C.A.R.E.4Paws, DAWG, VIVA, and the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation are part of the Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Alliance, a coalition of Santa Barbara County animal welfare agencies, shelters, and nonprofit organizations working collaboratively to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure that affordable spay/neuter services are available countywide.
